Romney?......Really!? by Finneus (October 15, 2011)

In the latest polls, former one-term Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney still leads the rest of the field by about 4 percentage points.  This is the same Mitt Romney who lost the 2008 Republican nomination to John McCain!  How embarrassing to have THAT on your resume’.  Romney has added nothing, other than a book, to his resume’ since his last presidential run.

Romney was governor of the liberal state of Massachusetts, a state that kept the Kennedys in government for decades.  Being elected as a Republican in a liberal state like Massachusetts means something different than it would here in the Hoosier Heartland.  Romney, the author of the famed “Romney-Care” state-run healthcare system, still supports the plan, which by many accounts has put a huge strain on the finances of the state and provided many of the basic premises incorporated into Obamacare.

You would think that Republicans would learn.  They have a history of putting forth candidates who are “next in line”.  Bob Dole, John McCain, Geo. Bush Sr., even Ronald Reagan were the “next in line” candidate for the nomination.  Romney is the current “next in line”.  Maybe it is the conservative nature to shy away from new people and ideas.  They would rather go with a brand name that has been around for a while; a comfortable candidate.  Maybe they are just afraid of losing.

In watching the debates, it is clear that Romney’s first presidential run prepared him for this one.  He has a slicker approach that plays well to the camera and has a polished answer for every question….a little too polished.  On paper his answers follow public opinion line for line, but through it all, I and others I talk to (especially women), get the feeling he is trying to sell us something.  He is trying to sell us that he is a strong conservative.  I’m not buying it!

Republicans keep wanting for another Reagan.  Romney’s continuing lead in the polls shows that Republicans don’t have the stomach to elect another Reagan. This country is in a serious position where it needs a bold leader with bold, new ideas, and people on both sides of the aisle know it.  This is a time reminiscent of Carter’s reelection run where the country can not, and will not, reelect the incumbent.  I have no doubt that Romney could beat Obama.  I think Daffy Duck could beat Obama (with a good campaign).

It is time for the Republicans to elect someone who will grab this bull by the horns and halt the direction of this country, turn it around, and steer it back to prosperity.    We can no longer afford another weak conservative in the White House simply managing the status quo. It is time for the Republican Party to step up and actually elect a conservative, to elect their Reagan.   And really, Romney is no Reagan!
